OOC: Tara and Her Alters

Tara Gregson is a complicated person, no thanks to the Dissociative Identity Disorder she developed as a young woman. Like most folks with DID, this is due to childhood abuse, and as the show does not reveal what exactly the nature of this abuse was until the third season, this FAQ will include spoilers.

Tara
Tara is the root personality, and is essentially considered to be the "real" person. She is an artist working as a mural painter at the beginning of the series. She isn't totally pleased with this job, however, and over time tries a few different creative outlets. The series begins just after she's stopped taking her medication, due to its dampening effect on her creativity, but it is this choice that causes her alters to resurface.

Tara is married to Max and has two teenage children, Kate and Marshall. Over the course of the series she has serious conflicts with all of them, but ultimately proves to truly love them all. By the end of the series, she even comes to care about her alters and seems to regret trying to get rid of them.

T
T is the youngest of Tara's original alters. She's a sixteen-year-old party girl with weaknesses for pot and pudding. And sex. In fact, until Max found out that T is mentally sixteen and always will be, he did have a few sexual encounters with her, but since this revelation he has made a deal with Tara that having sex with her alters was inappropriate.

Kate considers T to be her favorite alter, and T generally has a pretty easy time blending in with groups of teens. This is strange, given how stereotypical and obnoxious she can be, but on several occasions she has been fully accepted as an actual teen. She does, however, enjoy taking advantage of Tara's age when using her credit cards and, at one point, almost getting a tattoo.

Alice
Alice has been around the longest out of any of the alters, and very strongly resembles the woman who fostered Tara and her sister Charmaine. She's the stereotypical fifties housewife, complete with the lilting voice, perfect hair, and hidden drinking habit. Alice is Catholic and prudish, but considers Max to be her husband and makes sexual advances on him in an effort to have a child with him, as she considers Kate and Marshall to be Tara's children and not hers.

Alice is different from the other alters in that she is essentially their go-between. At first, she is the only one able to communicate with the other alters, and she is the first alter to "appear" to Tara while Tara is still conscious. She considers herself the keeper of the alters and is likely the personality that informs the alters of anything they might need to know, though she is perfectly capable of keeping secrets, as shown by her knowing about Gimmie before anyone else does.

Buck
Buck is Tara's first, and for a while only male alter. He's essentially a redneck whose hobbies include beer, hunting, and porn. There have been a few instances of Buck seducing women while in control of the body, despite his lack of equipment-- according to him, he lost his dick in 'nam. Buck differs from the other alters additionally by being left-handed and a smoker.

Out of all the alters, Buck is the most directly aggressive, and has come out to defend Tara and her family on several occasions. While he expresses clear unease in regards to Marshall's sexuality and anything fairly feminine, he clearly cares a lot about Tara's family and goes out of his comfort zone to show it. He does, however, go against Tara's wishes and do things behind her back on several different occasions, though ultimately he works to protect the body and the family.

Gimmie
Gimmie is an animalistic alter that is more of an "it" than anything else. It tends to come out in situations where Tara has been touched without her consent or otherwise thrown into a deeply uncomfortable situation. Gimmie usually runs and hides under sheets or tarps, but occasionally it is compelled to mark territory by writing on walls or peeing on people's personal property. Gimmie is not human and cannot be reasoned with like the other alters.

Others
Other alters show up over the course of the show, but as I have not updated Tara to those points, I figure I should keep them a mystery as much as possible. If you do want to read about them somewhere such as Wikipedia, their names are Shoshanna, Chicken, and Bryce.
